I have been looking forward to Roscoe Winston’s book ever since Beauty and the Mustache, Book 0.5 in the series. There was just something so sweet and endearing about the flirty, good-natured youngest Winston. I knew I’d love him. So was his book everything I thought it would be? Yes! And, also, no.
Roscoe’s book starts up five years after Beau’s book, Beard in Mind. And that brought us a lot of surprises! Minor spoilers: Someone is engaged! Someone is pregnant! And someone else shows up to cause a lot of trouble for our hero, Roscoe!
So, Roscoe has graduated from veterinary school and is working as a vet in Nashville (and volunteering his time at animal shelters because he’s awesome like that), but he still makes it home to Green Valley most weekends to spend time with her super-close family. But now his high school best friend, Simone, is back in town and that makes for an uncomfortable situation for Roscoe.
See, Roscoe has an eidetic memory. It’s kind of like a photographic memory, except it’s more situational. He can vividly recall details about his past – what you were wearing when you met him, what you said word for word, and how the interaction made him feel. This makes it hard for him to look at the girl who broke his heart. He could avoid her! If she’d only let him….
My heart breaks for Roscoe… Mostly because Simone is awesome, guys! I’m half in love with her myself! So, I really feel for him. But once they begin talking, their friendship is so cute! I wish I could just hang out with the two of them!
This book was a little different that some of Penny’s other books, which is why it didn’t quite live up to my expectations (but to be honest, my expectations were sky high). There was a mystery element, that I enjoyed a lot. But it took away from the romance a bit. And Reid is clearly setting us up here for the final two books in the series, Billy’s books. I wanted to be immersed in Roscoe’s world, not already be looking ahead to Billy’s.
But don’t be fooled; I still LOVED this book! It had all of Reid’s humor, all of her penchant for geekery, and quite a bit of heat (though not quite as much as I wanted. LOL).
Here are some of my favorite quotes from Dr. Strange Beard:
“We’re not giving anyone leprosy,” Ashley cut in, giving each of us in turn a look that communicated she meant business. “We’re filing a report with Sheriff James. That man needs to be fired. We’ll do this the right way.” Cletus continued to stroke his beard thoughtfully. “And if that doesn’t work, we’re all agreed.” He hit the table with a closed fist, as though it were a gavel, “Leprosy it is.”
“The pleasure of remembering had been taken from me, because there was no longer anyone to remember with. It felt like losing your co-rememberer meant like losing the memory itself.” 😦
“That’s what one does when Roscoe Winston kisses one. Moan and kiss. Repeat. Because not doing so would be a travesty.”
“The element of surprise was my favorite, even if it wasn’t on the periodic table. My second favorite was potassium, mostly because of its freak show reaction to water.”
“Memory is a strange thing. And endless reminder of the past, revealing itself – as a cannon blast or a whisper – when you’re least prepared for it.”
Five stars for book 5 in the Winston Brothers series!
From the publisher:

Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak
Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone.
Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . .
Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists.
But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . .
Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fifth book in the USA TODAY bestselling Winston Brothers series.
